BIOGRAPHY

Immersed in the expansive landscapes of western Victoria during his youth, Michael Shiell’s formative years were characterised by a deep exploration of the natural world. Cycling became his conduit for extended discovery, allowing him to delve into the environments that stirred his curiosity. This early connection with nature, coupled with a thirst for experiential knowledge, laid the foundation for his artistic journey.

While his artistic pursuits began modestly, marked by his first sale of an art piece at the age of 14, the true turning point came during his undergraduate studies. A pivotal moment arrived when he challenged conventional artistic paradigms by infusing his work with his own body and immersive techniques well beyond the studio and gallery settings. This marked a profound departure towards creating art imbued with personal truth and significance.

Further inspiration struck during a transformative encounter with a visiting lecturer from Scotland, who extended Michael’s preconceptions of the limitations of art. Subsequent experiences, including a poignant encounter with dew-soaked cobwebs at Mt Arapiles, underscored the profound link between art, environment, ephemerality, material and the role of the audience.

His journey has been punctuated by notable accolades, including numerous sculpture and arts conference awards. Additionally, Michael has participated in esteemed programs such as the Artist in Schools Program at Dimboola Memorial Secondary College, Lavers Hill P-12 College and most recently at Ringwood Heights Primary School. Notably, he has received prestigious fellowships and scholarships, including the AGL Shaw Research Fellowship at the State Library of Victoria and the University of Ballarat Postgraduate Research Scholarship. These recognitions, alongside grants and residencies have propelled Michael’s artistic exploration and development.
